The lanky and athletic Jeter had always been a great talent and won several local awards before his final MLB (Major League Baseball) debut in 1995. He is known for his patented “inside-out” swing and acrobatic jump-throws. Derek Sanderson is unarguably one of the most heavily marketed athletes of his generation and since his retirement has been pursuing several business interests.

Sanderson Charles Jeter (father)

He was a counsellor for people with substance abuse problems and also played shortstop for Fisk University in Tennessee. In 1972, he met Dorothy when they were both stationed in the Frankfurt army. They were married a year later and the year after, the sports legend was born. When Derek was 4, the family moved to Michigan so Sanderson could complete his maters’ degree and subsequently get a doctorate in sociology.

In 1996, Charles and his only son founded a foundation that encourages people to pursue a healthy living whilst staying away from drugs and alcohol. Jeter was not yet hugely famous but had at this time started establishing himself in the baseball highlights. According to the baseball legend, his father is a very vital part of his life and career as he has been his biggest fan since the very first day he told him of his dream.

Dorothy was an accountant and Derek stated that his mother made him sign behavioural contracts for his study habits, grades, curfew times and him staying drug and alcohol free. These were the conditions he had to meet before his goal as a baseball prodigy was allowed to see the light of day. She clearly shares a special bond with her only son as he looks over and gives her a nod before his first at-bat.

She is the youngest sister and only sibling to the legendary star, he also considers her his best friend. They grew up together and both excelled on the ball field but for the female Jeter, it was softball. The renowned athlete was asked once what his first memory is as a child and his answer was when his sister was born.

Since the beginning of the Turn 2 Foundation, Sharlee had been a dedicated member; she was always there during her college breaks and eventually joined the organization full time upon her graduation. Today she is the committed President of the foundation and is doing an extremely successful job.

In November 2000, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease but kept it to herself until she was cured before letting the media know about it. Sharlee became a mother in 2012 to a son Jalen to an undisclosed father. Derek however serves as a father figure to the little prince and was inspired to have a family of his own when he realized how much Jalen means to him.
