Early Life

Joseph Elliott Girardi was born on October 14, 1964, in Peoria, Illinois to Jerry Girardi, a former blue-collar worker, the United States Air Force veteran, and Angela Girardi.

Girardi’s father died from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 81, and his mother died of cancer. John Girardi, George Girardi, Maria Girardi, and Gerald Girardi are Joe’s siblings.

He attended the Spalding Institute before attending Northwestern University, where he was a member of the Northwestern Wildcats baseball team and a two-time All-Big Ten pick as well as a three-time Academic All-American.

He has selected as a league all-star while playing collegiate summer baseball and graduated from Northwestern with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1986.

He was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for demonstrating combined athletic and academic excellence throughout their college career. He was also the first freshman to be elected president of a fraternity (Alpha Tau Omega).

Career

During his Major League Baseball career (1989 to 2003), Girardi played catcher for the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals. He won three World Series championship titles with the Yankees in the 1990s.

Girardi was the manager of the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017, winning the World Series in 2009 over the Philadelphia Phillies. He managed the Florida Marlins from 2006 to 2019.
