Born Jeffrey Alan Cook on August 27, 1949, the country singer grew up in an area with strong country music roots. He fell in love with music at a young age and played lead guitar in his first band called The Viscounts.
Cook obtained his license just three days after he turned fourteen. He was then hired as a disc jockey at a local radio station while attending Fort Payne High School. He also earned an electronic technology degree from Alabama State Technical College.
During college, Cook formed a band called Wildcountry, together with cousins Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry. The group would perform at local clubs and in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Eventually, they changed the band’s name to Alabama and expanded its popularity.
Cook has also released a number of albums as a solo artist. This includes Jeff Cook Presents Christmas Joy and Shaken Not Stirred.
In 2017, Cook announced that he had been quietly struggling with Parkinson’s disease for a few years. Because of the progressive disorder, causing tremors, rigid muscles, and imprecise movement, Cook was forced to step back from touring with the group. But he made it clear he’s not leaving the band. “Sometimes our bodies dictate what we have to do,” Cook said. “And mine is telling me it’s time to take a break and heal.”
One of Cook’s lifelong dreams has come true with the construction of Cook Sound Studio in Fort Payne, Alabama. It is Cook’s way of helping other musicians chase their dreams as an artist and share their music with the world. He has also launched his own radio station called WQRX-AM,
Cook is also noted for his culinary endeavors. In fact, he had his cooking sauce patented.
In 1995, Cook married Delta flight attendant Lisa Williams. The happy couple has settled in “The Castle,” a fifteen thousand square foot home that’s situated on top of Lookout Mountain that overlooks Fort Payne. It was the very first project of Cook’s construction company Bass Builders.
Truly, Jeff Cook is one of the most admirable country artists in history.
