BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — As kids are getting out of school and summer is about to begin, this is typically the busiest time of the year for recreation programs and sports leagues.
But, as of right now, Boise Parks and Recreation does not have a specific timeline for reopening because of how unpredictable the virus is.
While Boise Parks and Recreation is aware that the community is counting on safe, affordable, and accessible activities, they want to make sure things are safe before reopening and offering programs. As of right now, they are only offering one program for the summer.
“We’re going to begin our play camp program and 8 different park sites in the city," said Doug Holloway, Director of Boise Parks and Recreation. "We feel comfortable because it’s an outdoor program, and we feel like it’s large enough we can comfortably keep kids at a distance, and still have them in safe activities. That program will begin June 1."
Holloway says that is the only program they are offering at the moment, which will be a good outlet for parents who have to go to work and want to have their children in a safe environment
Other than that, they don’t have a specific timeline as of right now for other programs.
“I hurt for people that want to play softball. That wanted to play 3v3 basketball this summer, that want to be at Rhodes Skate Park, which we have blocked off right now because of our concern with the distancing," Holloway said. "There’s just a lot of activities, programs, facilities that we can’t offer right now that I know people want to take advantage of”
Holloway says they are working on plans in the background and hope to offer more activities and programs as soon as possible.
